Quail & Other Wildlife Hunting Is Very Popular In The Georgia Outdoors!
Almost 300,000 hunters registered in Georgia in 2008. Not only is hunting a sport but it is a way of life in Georgia as hunters often have to hunt to feed their family all year long. Besides Bobwhite quail, wild turkeys are a plentiful fowl in Georgia hunted late March through mid May! Turkeys are very smart, and can be pretty hard to cheat in the wide open. It takes a lot of camouflage as well as cajoling by turkey calls to lure one close enough to kill. Turkeys love to follow the rivers and streams near woodlands and will emerge in the wide open at times when you least expect it. I would consider the turkey, the fox of the bird kingdom… and in Georgia is a “fox”that is well hunted.
The Georgia low lands are famous for their waterfowl. There are opportunities everywhere to hunting kill plenty of birds anywhere in the state of Georgia. (except in the in the middle of Atlanta!) Also home to the woodcock, some varieties are nearing extinction so you need to study and know your woodcock species well.
Marsh hens are a popular food source for hunters and a larger bird that keeps well in the freezer. One bird nobody minds that you kill in Georgia is the crow! This bird has no bag limit and it is encouraged to take as many out as you can!
You can even find alligator hunting in South Georgia! What an adventure! Wildlife is plentiful in the state of Georgia. Of course everyone knows that deer hunting is big in Georgia. You have also have bear hunting too in the north Georgia mountains!
Another animal, the wild hog, is invading the state of Georgia and you can hunt year around for it on private land! Wild hogs are not native and they have the ability to destroy a lot of habitat and forage for the other native animals. Wild boar also have a bad habit of destroying gardens and fences throughout the north Georgia mountains.
My hunt of choice is bob white quail hunting, as well as dove hunting! I particularly like to eat quail. Even though it doesn’t have a lot of meat, it takes real good. When I cook mine, I like it marinated in a sweet barbecue sauce and add a little bit of garlic. Can I get the skillet grill hot, and add a little olive oil. I would then add the quail after the oil is really high and cook it to a golden brown. Delicious! After I cook them I will drop them in some smoked barbecue sauce, fresh fried quail wings you can’t beat them!
Georgia quail hunting is very popular because the habitat for bobwhites is perfect. You can find great grassy marshes around much of Georgia, often with a corn field or soybean crop beside them. This is perfect habitat for many waterfowl and other wildlife.
There is nothing greater than quail on the bob on your next hunting trip! There are enough Bob White quails in Georgia to keep the hunters busy all season long!
